Used Golf Carts— The Many Uses

By: Mike Campbell

On a mini-golf course, the holes are merely feet away from one another, so it is not necessary for players to use golf carts as a source of transportation.  However, for large golf courses on resorts or at country clubs, it is often tiresome to walk from hole to hole.  It is for this reason that these vehicles are now used as a method of transportation on golf courses; yet, this is not the only use for the vehicles.  Golf carts have been adapted for uses beyond their original intention; they have made a difference on and off the golf course.

Golf Carts - In The Beginning

Golf carts have been in use since at least 1951, when Merle Williams invented them using technology developed during World War II.  It was in this year that William’s company, Marketeer Company, began to produce electric golf carts in Redland, California.  Other companies soon followed suit.  In 1954, E-Z-GO and LEKTRO began production; Cushman began in 1955, in 1958 Club Car began.  Taylor-Dun began in 1961 and in 1961 Harley Davidson started production.

It was not until 1971 that gas powered golf carts began being produced.

Although the electric golf carts are more environmentally friendly, the gas powered golf carts quickly gained popularity, especially in the small town of The Villages, Florida.  Carts that are gas powered can reach speeds of up to 45 mph, while those that are electric powered typically only reach speeds of 25 mph.

Off Course Innovation

It was after the invention of gas powered golf carts that the vehicles became a popular form of transportation in small communities.  Now, electric and gas powered golf carts are common in certain towns and communities.  It all began with The Villages, a retirement community of 70,000 in Florida.  The town now has an intricate trail system of approximately 100 miles, and golf carts are even allowed on some streets.

Golf carts are a popular method of transportation in other communities as well.  Peachtree City, Georgia is a city linked by trails.  In this community, the carts are most popular among High School students, so much so that some High Schools even have designated parking lots for these vehicles.  Motorized vehicles are not allowed on Baldhead Island in North Carolina, so golf carts are a popular alternative.  The vehicles are also the main source of transportation in Queensland, Hamilton Island, Australia, and the Tropical Islands of Belize.

Used Golf Carts For The Future?

Unless you are out specifically for the exercise, golf carts are a great way to get from hole to hole on the golf course. This also helps you save more energy for the game. However, despite the fact that golf carts were originally invented for use on the golf course, they are now popular as an alternate form of transportation in many parts of the World.  Could they be the solution to a future that is both environmentally and energy friendly?  Only time will tell.
